Pricing.
Some people may see the price of a piece of bespoke furniture and think it is excessive and overpriced, however you have to consider what you are getting for your money.
You may be able to buy a mass produced table or chair for a few hundred pounds, or less, but it will have been made by the thousands, possibly tens of thousands. It will have been made in a factory where every one is identical, and the people making it have no interest in the furniture or the materials used. There’s nothing wrong with this, of course. That’s just why it’s so cheap.
In comparison, a piece of furniture made by myself has been carefully and lovingly crafted from start to finish. Each piece is made to order, the rough sawn timber selected from local sawmills, machined, sculpted and finished just for you.
If you had some joinery work carried out in your home, perhaps some MDF cupboards, or some new, off the shelf doors fitted, it would cost hundreds of pounds, and even more. After the joiner has left, it still needs to be painted.
A bespoke piece of furniture arrives, beautifully finished and built to last a lifetime. Something unique to you, and you can take it with you when you move.
The two main criteria for pricing are the volume of wood, and the time taken. Furniture with a lot of wood, e.g. a chunky dining table, is going to cost a lot for the materials. Adding more drawers, shelves, doors etc will all increase the time and therefore the cost.
Below is a rough guide to prices:
· From £300; small upholstered stool, side table.
· From £600; bookcase, coffee table, carver chair.
· From £1000; console table/storage unit with drawer.
· From £1200; simple upholstered armchair, small dining table/desk.
· From £1800; larger dining table, cabinet with drawers and doors.
· From £2500; extending dining table.
This is a very rough guide to prices, and obviously does not include all types of furniture. Please look at our gallery for more examples.
